Mantua Pears

Assigned with the PGI label, the Mantua pear is one of the most important fruits produced in this zone. Renowned for its nutritional properties, this fruit, already in the first years of the 16th century, perfectly matched with honey and grana padano cheese. The cultivation of this fruit influenced, especially during the Gonzaga period, numerous pictorial representations such as festoons of pears in the “Chamber of the Spouses” in Mantegna. There are also other pre-1567 testimonials in the Viadana zones like the frieze and festoon of fruits in the Hall of the Throne in the Palazzo Ducale of Sabbioneta.
