Villa Medici del Vascello

In 1407, in the context of the ongoing struggle for territorial supremacy, the Lord of Cremona Cabrino Fondulo chose San Giovanni in Croce to build a mighty fortress, which can still be admired today after its transformation into the elegant Villa Medici del Vascello. The Villa was built for military purposes and transformed into a noble house at the end of the century, when the property was granted by Galeazzo Sforza to Count Bergamino as a feudal legacy. The Villa is surrounded by a vast picturesque garden. Within its walls lived Cecilia Gallerani, a fascinating noblewoman made famous by Leonardo da Vinci’s celebrated painting of the “Lady with an Ermine” which today is preserved in the castle of Krakow.
